Who can apply for a partner or spouse visa?

Partners of British citizens and people settled in the UK, including spouses, civil partners, unmarried partners who have been together for the qualifying period, and fiancé(e)s intending to marry.

If you are not yet married but plan to be, the fiancé(e) route is the right one - we cover that on a separate page.

How the financial requirement works

You must show an income of at least £29,000.00 a year. That can come from employment, self-employment, pensions, or other permitted sources. If your income is lower, savings can make up the difference.

An example. Your partner in the UK earns £24,000. You are £5,000 short. Savings of £28,500, held for six months, would cover the gap. We work this out for you before anything is submitted.

If you are in receipt of an eligible benefit, you may be exempt from meeting the financial requirement.

Getting this wrong is the most common reason partner applications are refused. It is the part we spend the most time on.

A couple relaxing together on a sofa by a bright window, one holding a mug - the £29,000 financial requirement is evidenced from the household you share, so the arithmetic has to be right before the application goes in.

Different immigration categories have different income thresholds. There may be a minimum income threshold that could be met through savings, or through a combination of both. The figures often change so we check the current requirements against your evidence before you apply.
